Lesson 4. Document and Data Connections: Exploring GIS (Computer Lab)
Learning Objectives
- Make connections between primary source documents and census data maps
- Gather evidence from maps, letters and images to support specific inferences about causes and effects of the Great Migration.
Teacher Materials
- Projector and computer with Web access
- "How to use the Evidence and Inference Worksheet" (tutorial)
Student Materials
Activities
- Tutorial: How to capture evidence
- Use projector to demonstrate techniques for capturing evidence from the website
- Framing and screen capture of Maps
- Accessing Great Migration Letters and quoting text
- Exploring Great Migration Images and copying photos
- Class simulates gathering evidence and making inferences
- Students open Evidence and Inference Worksheet (electronic) from link on DOCUMENTS page [[NOTE: only works with Internet Explorer]]
- Students "Save As..." onto their computer, renaming as their own
- Distribute Evidence and Inference Checklist (paper handout) and discuss requirements
- Walk through examples of evidence capture & inferences on data projector:
- Begin answering Question 1 with a map screen capture
- Bad Example - poor framing & zoom level; no label; no query data shown; vague overview & inference
- Good Example - appropriate framing & zoom level; label visible; query data visible; inference includes specific observations and connects evidence to claims made in overview
- You will now be working on your own to capture evidence and make inferences. Are there any questions before we begin?
- Capturing evidence, making inferences: student project
- Review all materials from Lessons 1, 2, and 3 to help make inferences, choose what evidence to capture, and write overview paragraphs.
- Begin capturing evidence from maps, letters, and images
- Begin writing overviews (approximately 75 words each) and inferences
- Students may work individually OR in small groups
